How to Care for a YiXing Teapot

YiXing teapots, also known as purple sand teapots, are made with clay from the town of YiXing in the Jiangsu province in China. The pots are highly porous and whatever you put in it will flavor, or season, the pot. These pots may also be prone to mold and mildew. For this reason, you need to be mindful of the types of tea you brew in your YiXing pot, as well as how you maintain the pot between uses.

Things You'll Need

  • Cold water

  • Soft cloth

  • Wooden spoon

    • 1

Rinse the YiXing teapot in cold water after each use. Rinsing removes any tea leaves in the bottom of the pot.

    • 2

Dip a soft cloth in cold water and wrap it around the head of a wooden spoon. Stick the cloth-covered spoon inside the pot and gently wipe the interior in a circular motion. Do not use metal, which can scratch and damage the inside of the pot.

Remove the cloth and rinse the interior, again, with cold water. Turn the pot upside down on a clean, dry towel to air dry. Allow the pot to dry thoroughly before you put it away.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use soap or other cleansers on a YiXing pot. These substances can seep into the pores and ruin the flavor of your tea or make you sick.

  • Do not wash the YiXing pot in the dishwasher.

  • Do not heat the YiXing pot in the microwave. Doing so may crack the pot, and any metal content in the clay or glazes may cause the microwave to spark
